專業介紹

The curriculum has four distinctinterconnected sequences that are required of all students (except those whomay be allowed to waive certain requirements because of previous experience ortraining). These are the Design Studio, Workshop, Theory, and Media sequences. The curriculum is designed so that these four sequences relate to one anotherhorizontally throughout the entire degree.

A three-year student is expected to takesix semesters of design studio work, the first four of which are consideredcore requirements (501, 502, 601 and 602) and the last two are electivechoices. All studios meet for 12 hours per week, and the core studios aresupplemented by the media courses, which meet for 3-4 hours per week.

For students in the three-year MLA program, the LARP Studio II and III, Media II and III, Workshop II, III and IV all havepre-requisites. Students must have successfully completed Studio I, Media I andWorkshop I, prior to moving through the additional courses in those sequences. Each core course is a pre-requisite of the one that numerically follows it. TheDepartment of Landscape Architecture will drop a student from a core Studio,Media or Workshop course if the student has not successfully completed thecourse in the previous semester or resolved an "Incomplete" gradeprior to the start of the subsequent semester, unless special circumstancesprevail.

Students in the two-year MLA program mustsuccessfully complete or resolve "Incomplete" grades in Studio IIIand Workshop III prior to taking Studio IV and Workshop IV. Master of Landscape Architecture

The Department of Landscape Architectureand Environmental Planning offers three Master of Landscape Architecture(M.L.A.) degree programs that are structured to equip students with advanceddesign and planning skills:

The three-year M.L.A. degree is the firstprofessional degree accredited by the American Society of Landscape Architects(ASLA). This degree is for students with non-design backgrounds.

The two-year M.L.A. degree is the secondprofessional degree for those students with first degrees in landscapearchitecture, architectur e, or environmental design.

The department also offers a two-yearenvironmental planning program leading to the M.L.A. degree for students with astrong background in the environmental sciences or management.

專業2:MASTER OF URBAN DESIGN

Master of Urban Design

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Program in the Design of Urban Places, leading to the Master of Urban Design degree, is a unique, interdisciplinaryprogram of advanced study in which exceptional architects, landscapearchitects, and planners holding professional degrees partake of an intense, focused learning experience of 12 months’ duration. Students share workingmethods, acquire additional skills, and explore new avenues of developmentunder the supervision of an interdisciplinary group of faculty members in theCollege of Environmental Design drawn from the Departments of Architecture,Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning, and City and RegionalPlanning. In addition to the program’s core curriculum, Urban Design studentscan construct a trans-disciplinary course of study with studios, lectures andseminar courses from all three departments in the college.

The program addresses the need forprofessionals who are specifically concerned with the design of varied urbanareas open to public use. The activities of urban design are diverse in bothtype and scale; it may be concerned with settlement patterns in urbanizingareas, city or town layout, the restructuring of inner cities , themetropolitan edge—mega-cities, territorial dispersed settlements or converselythe planning of cities decreasing in population. Studies may lead to the designof infrastructure such as highways, streets, bicycle, pedestrian trails andopen spaces, buildings, and landscape patterns that establish neighborhoods andprovide the settings for public life. Alternatively the program may work oninfill in older towns and cities, or may prepare plans, guidelines, orstandards to manage extensive new development at the metropolitan growth edge. Our platform incorporates ecological concerns including the understanding ofwatersheds, topography, conservation or creation of green areas, the need forthe preservation of energy resources and a good equitable and varied quality oflife for present and future generations.

UC Berkeley is located in one of the mostdiverse urban areas of the country featuring a varied urban field that containsthe traditional fabric of the older areas of San Francisco, Silicon Valley aswell as generations of diverse suburban/urban neighborhoods. The Master ofUrban Design program at U.C. Berkeley is focused on California the mostpopulous and most diverse states in the US but sees the rest of country and theworld as vital source of knowledge. To that objective the program organizesyearly workshops in Asia, Europe or Latin America and assigns travel grants tostudents on a competitive basis to study places worldwide that relate to theirthesis.
