#AmericanJazz – Jazz Origins in New Orleans
New Orleans is known as the birthplace of jazz. Founded in 1718 by French colonists, the city has retained a European and Catholic character that is distinctive among U.S. cities. Its’ Creole culture and a motto of “Laissez les bons temps rouler (Let the good times roll),” New Orleans is known as a city for parties and revelry such as Mardi Gras, a festival marked by parades and costumes that is celebrated before the beginning of the Christian fasting period of Lent. At the end of the 19th century, jazz music was born in places like the New Orleans red-light district of Storyville, combining elements of ragtime, marching band music and blues as well as improvisation. Even today, the New Orleans French Quarter is famous for its jazz clubs and street jazz. Have you ever visited New Orleans?
