Lab Rat Under The Andes

Buenos Aires one year after,

has been increasing the anger and uncertainty

after the change of the party.

I kept shooting my project

during this uncertain belonging.

Went to sell my photo on the street,

got along with the street artist,

listen to all kinds of crazy stories

of different strangers,

honestly, that was much happier

than exhibition in London.

So I got to think about the value of the art.

I thought I was going to stay in BA a bit,

but the daily life started to hit me,

I was bored to death, begging for an other movement.

So I end up on the plane to Santiago,

but this time, I’m trying to live another way not depending on money.

The reason is simple,

I have done pretty well in the system,

now I wanna see if I can find

some alternative way outside of the system.

Santiago

Santiago got this sweetness compare to BA.

if Argentina is like this red bull rushing and dancing in the wild,

Chile will be the brown horse that keep

moving forward with its balance.

Everything here is closer to the nature,

that brings the peace and wild to the people,

on the other hand,

also lack of the melting passion as argentines.

With all kinds of the cheap products,

Chile is probably

the most “capitalism” country

in Latin America,

when the poor is trying to sell cheap toothbrush or chocolate on the bus,

argentine keeps selling music and dance.

Valparaiso.

The host that offer to couch surfer me

named Marcos, came back to Chile

when he was 17 to fight against dictatorship,

went to Oxford and Cambridge grabbed all the post-graduated diploma,

traveling and teaching in

more than 70 countries since then.

Last year he quitted the job in Saudi Arabic,

set himself free back to Chile

to be a musician.

One month later, I went to Valparaiso.

It’s a small town alone the sea,

occupied by colorful corrupted houses,

you meet street dog in every corner.

Because it’s a port,

the town is filled up with

cheap products and easier life.

it attracted bunch of artists as well.

Roberto,

My host Roberto does sculpture,

1.9 high with long hair,

he went to live in the mountain

when he was 25,

been kicked out from the mountain,

since then he worked very hard,

used the money brought a hill in Valparaiso.

Built the studio, the garden, all cabin

with different volunteers,

I helped him with

stone sculpture, making leather.

At night, with bottle of wine,

we talked and talked

about art, laozi and this world.

Sandra,

After making 13 leathers,

I said goodbye to Roberto,

came to this island called Chiloe in the south.

I met Sandra here,

She is this Peruvian woman who suffer from the war,

went to London alone when she was 20,

gave up her architect career,

started as a photographer,

traveled everywhere,

and met Britt who is also a traveler

in Santiago 18 years ago.

They decided to come to Chiloe to start a life after they met for 10 hours.

Then they built the house,

then 3 girl came,

then they never left the island.

After 3 month of experimenting life

not on money,

I survived.

I want to keep going

one by one in Latin America.

Building deeper connection with

each person who comes to my life,

I start to have a wilder perspective of life

when money is not only common value,

I think this is exactly what I wanted.

They will melt into my photo,

build it to another level.
